Burst pipe in winter: first steps before the plumber arrives
What to do in the first minutes after a winter pipe burst to reduce ongoing water damage and give the plumber a clearer job.
Updated September 28, 2026Stop the water if you can do so safely
The immediate objective is to stop continued flow. If you know the main shutoff location and can reach it safely, close it. If water is near energized electrical equipment, do not step into the wet area to reach switches or panels.
Document the location and extent
Take photos or video after immediate safety steps. Note where the pipe is visible, whether the break is accessible, which fixtures or areas lost water, and whether ceilings, walls or flooring are saturated.
Plumbing repair and water cleanup may be separate services
The plumber restores or isolates the failed pipe. If a significant volume of water entered building materials, drying and restoration may be a separate workstream. Asking for both at the same time can shorten the gap between stopping the leak and starting moisture control.
