A furnace that starts, stops and restarts unusually often may be responding to a control, airflow, overheating, ignition or other system problem. The exact cause cannot be identified from the symptom alone, so the useful next step is to document the pattern.
Record the cycle before changing everything
Note how long the furnace runs, whether the blower continues after heat stops, whether the thermostat reaches its setpoint and whether an error light or code appears. If a recently changed filter or thermostat setting coincides with the problem, mention that too.
Safety overrides troubleshooting
Do not bypass furnace safety switches. If a carbon-monoxide alarm activates, Ontario guidance is to leave the building immediately and call emergency services from outside.
