Ice dam removal: what a professional is trying to accomplish
Understand the goal of ice-dam removal, the role of roof temperature and why simply breaking visible ice may not solve the underlying problem.

Natural Resources Canada explains that roof snow can melt over warmer roof areas and refreeze near colder eaves. Once that ridge grows, later meltwater can back up behind it and move under roofing materials. The service goal is therefore to restore safe drainage and reduce the immediate leak risk.
Removal and prevention are separate jobs
Emergency removal addresses current ice. Long-term prevention can involve air sealing, insulation, ventilation and drainage conditions that affect roof temperature. A contractor removing the ice is not automatically diagnosing every building-envelope cause.
Useful information before dispatch
Send photos of the roof edge and any interior staining, note whether water is actively entering, and describe roof height and access. If ice hangs over entrances, driveways or walkways, mention the area below because falling ice changes the safety setup.
