People often use the terms interchangeably, but the operational goal is different. De-icing products are used to break or prevent the bond between ice and pavement. Sand and similar abrasives primarily improve grip on a slippery surface rather than melting the ice itself.
The best treatment depends on conditions
Surface temperature, precipitation type, drainage, foot traffic, pets, landscaping and the surface material can all affect the treatment plan. A provider may use different products or application rates for a residential walkway, a loading dock and a large parking lot.
What to include in a de-icing request
Describe whether the issue is fresh freezing rain, compacted snow, refrozen meltwater or a recurring icy spot. Photos help. For commercial sites, identify entrances, accessible routes, ramps, loading areas and any surfaces where product choice is restricted.
